This examination of its impact in the form of "aggressive" communication, policies and assumptions is a valuable read for anyone working within multicultural organizations, which should be everyone. He has assembled experts in their field who share not only the dynamics of "microaggressions," but also their impact, personally and to organizational culture. Because of the Kids : Facing Racial and Cultural Differences in Schools (Practitioner Inquiry, 18) ReviewThis book gives good insight into the world of teaching and how the differences we perceive as teachers are some of the same differences our students face in the learning process. It opens your eyes to understanding your role as a teacher and how the stereotypes we bring with us may affect our effectiveness as teachers. I recommend this book to everyone trying to understand how to effectively teach a diversity of students to reach their full potential.Because of the Kids : Facing Racial and Cultural Differences in Schools (Practitioner Inquiry, 18) OverviewHere, the authors recount how they set out on a collaborative three-year study to explore the impact of racial and cultural differences in one of their urban, middle school classrooms. Turning on Learning: Five Approaches for Multicultural Teaching Plans for Race, Class, Gender and Disability ReviewWhen I saw the price for this textbook, I thought it was a joke. My options were paying an average of $87. But I got it for under $10. When it arrives it was in the best condition. I could've asked for anything better. It was hard to tell that this interactive textbook/workbook was ever used. Being a proscrastinator, I was also pleasantly surprised that it arrived to my home in less than 72 hours. Thanks again.Turning on Learning: Five Approaches for Multicultural Teaching Plans for Race, Class, Gender and Disability OverviewThis new Fourth Edition contains many lesson plans that cover a variety of subject areas and grade levels (1-12), as well as action research activities that investigate the various dimensions of teaching. Many of the lesson plans are written by actual classroom teachers, and all of them have been examined by practicing teachers. More than simply a "how-to" manual, it is designed to help the teacher or teacher education student teach from a multicultural perspective. Each lesson plan offers a "Before" version (the lesson as it is usually taught) and an "After" version (how the lesson can be improved to "turn on" learning). A discussion explaining why the changes were made follows each lesson plan.

The Seventh Generation: Native Students Speak About Finding the Good Path ReviewHello
I am currently re-reading "The Seventh Generation, Native Students Speak About Finding the Good Path" by Amy Bergstrom, Linda Miller Cleary, and Thomas D. Peacock. Written as a textbook for Native students in j.h and h.s, Seventh Generation goes far beyond these perimeters and offers educators a fascinating exploration into the lives of Native American youth and their attitudes/approaches towards life and education. Seventh Generation also suggests educational ideas and methods to help Native students meet success.
My favorite thing about Seventh Generation?...It's written by both students and educators who share mutual respect for their cultures and each other.
Gina Boltz, Director
Native Village Publications...The Seventh Generation: Native Students Speak About Finding the Good Path OverviewThis book is based on interviews with 120 Native youth from across North America. Written especially for today's Native middle and high school students, the authors share students' stories of life's challenges and their struggles to find and stay on the Good Path. They focus especially on how students developed strong Native identities; coped with troubles in their families, communities, and schools; reached their breaking points or responded resiliently to high-pressure situations; learned to appreciate their own intellectual gifts and abilities; and met the academic and social challenges they encountered in school. Interspersed throughout the book are short fictional "teaching stories" meant to illustrate common dilemmas faced by Native youth and how the characters responded.

Learning a New Land: Immigrant Students in American Society ReviewSuarez-Orozco et. al set out with a distinct goal for the Longitudinal Immigration Student Adaptation study, and they met this goal through a robust, mixed-methodologies study of recently arrived immigrant students in the United States. The mix of ethnographic, psychological, and educational metrics used are artfully described in the introduction, contextualizing the resultant data in meaningful ways. The outward purpose of Longitudinal Immigrant Student Adaptation Study, and by extension Learning in a New Land, is to "gain a more complete understanding of the experience of immigration," (p.6). More specifically, the book seeks to illuminate the academic progress of recently arrived immigrant children over five years. The authors successfully achieve this, reporting the statistically significant and case study-based findings for how elements of immigrant children's lives interact to affect academic achievement.
Overall, the book does an excellent job in presenting the results of a large-scale study in a relevant, nuanced form that is easily read by educational professionals of varying orientations. The policy implications are clearly advocated. However, the book's treatment of micro-issues, such as how educators can mitigate the effects gender has on educational achievement, lacks concrete suggestions. The field can pick up where the authors left off by discussing such issues that were raised in the research. I expect discussion of theory and possible interventions to follow this work. Carola and Marcelo Suárez-Orozco, Irina Todorova, and the myriad field researchers deserve congratulations for a comprehensive, well-defined, rigorous study that is expertly summarized and discussed in Learning in a New Land.Learning a New Land: Immigrant Students in American Society Overview
One child in five in America is the child of immigrants, and their numbers increase each year. Very few will return to the country they barely remember. Who are they, and what America do they know?

Based on an extraordinary interdisciplinary study that followed 400 newly arrived children from the Caribbean, China, Central America, and Mexico for five years, this book provides a compelling account of the lives, dreams, and frustrations of these youngest immigrants. Richly told portraits of high and low achievers are packed with unexpected ironies. When they arrive, most children are full of optimism and a respect for education. But poor neighborhoods and dull--often dangerous--schools can corrode hopes. The vast majority learn English--but it is the English of video games and the neighborhood, not that of standardized tests.

For some of these children, those heading off to college, America promises to be a land of dreams. These lucky ones have often benefited from caring mentors, supportive teachers, or savvy parents. For others, the first five years are marked by disappointments, frustrations, and disenchantment. How can we explain their varied academic journeys?

The children of immigrants, here to stay, are the future--and how they adapt will determine the nature of America in the twenty-first century.

The Dreamkeepers: Successful Teachers of African American Children ReviewLadson-Billings, wrote an extraordinary book on African American students and the struggles they face trying to receive an education equal to that of other races. She took a look into the classrooms of eight teachers who perhaps had different teaching styles, but all had one common goal to provide an education for all students. She wrote this book from an author, a student, a teacher, and a parent's prospective. She included such issues as being a cultural relevant teacher. Being a teacher who doesn't mind accomodating and adapting to the needs of her students. She also addressed the issue of teachers who were assimilators. If you have any plans or desires to teach, this is a must read book. This book was enjoyable, easy to read, and cultural relevant. The Dreamkeepers: Successful Teachers of African American Children Overview

Exchange Student Survival Kit ReviewThis is an excellent book for anyone who's going to be an exchange student, as it gives the reader a realistic view of what going on the exchange will really entail. It covers settling in, homesickness, culture shock, making friends, learning the language, getting ready to leave, and "reverse culture shock" -- coming home again. Although not every exchange student may experience the stages in the exact order or extent the author describes, most exchange students will be able to identify with what she's saying. I found it very informative and comforting to read this book before going to Ecuador for a year, and it was also helpful to read during the exchange, simply to know that what seemed like bizarre feelings were really fairly normal for exchange students. Do yourself a favor and read this book before you go, you'll be glad you did. It'll leave you feeling a whole lot less in the dark about what's going to happen during your exchange.Exchange Student Survival Kit OverviewStudy abroad has never been so popular, and as students are embarking on life-changing adventures, they need some tried and true advice. "The Exchange Student Survival Kit" has become the essential guide for young people traveling abroad, helping them better understand the unique experience of international exchange programs and avoid many common misunderstandings and problems that may occur in the course of their adjustment to a new culture, a new family, a new school and a new community. Based on her years of research and professional involvement with AFS Intercultural Programs, Dr Hansel has filled the book with examples taken from the experiences of dozens of exchange students from a broad spectrum of cultures. This much-awaited new edition includes: New communications technology as it affects the experience: email, instant messaging, cell phones, on-line games and blogs and information searches; Important advice on personal safety, pressing concerns for parents and students in light of war, terrorism, and crime; and, Changes in society and family life that affect travelers: fast food replacing family meals, a new emphasis on religious beliefs, consumerism, and globalism. For the student going abroad, "The Exchange Student Survival Kit" is the first thing to pack!
