Rethinking Technology in Schools (Peter Lang Primers) ReviewAs an educator, discovering ways to use technology in my instruction has become very important. I want to be able to use technology in meaningful ways that are integrated into my curriculum and enhance my students' learning experiences. Students, today, love technology and the multimodal features it provides, but where do educators, administrators and parents and guardians go to make sense out of it all? Rethinking Technology in Schools by Vanessa Elaine Domine is the one resource that not only provides a historical perspective, but also offers readers information to become more powerful, intelligent users of technology. The thought processes that are needed to integrate technology into curriculums and the professional development and the pedagogical considerations are challenged through the author's commanding voice and vision. The glossaries at the end of each chapter create a relevancy that will earn Rethinking Technology in Schools a place as one of the most referenced books in a personal and professional library. It has helped me to "rethink" the computers that are in my classroom, giving me the confidence to create a pedagogy that reflects the technological skills my students will need to effectively communicate and, more importantly, to learn.Rethinking Technology in Schools (Peter Lang Primers) OverviewAmong the many challenges facing public schooling in the United States is the often irrelevant usage of technology in the classroom in ways that support the textbook and computer industries more than student learning and achievement. This primer reframes the longstanding debate about instructional technology in school classrooms and challenges the reader to think more critically and conscientiously about the fundamental communication and technological processes that mediate learning and ultimately define education. The primer offers educators at all levels a three-dimensional map for exploring the philosophical, pedagogical, and practical uses of technology to serve rather than subvert the public purposes of education in a democracy.

Teaching from the Heart: Reflections, Encouragement, and Inspiration ReviewThis book is wonderful. It's great for encouragement both to the veteran teacher and inspiration for the beginning teacher. The chapter titled "Candles" is a must read for all teachers who are beginning to wonder why they teach. This would make a great gift for anyone involved in education.Teaching from the Heart: Reflections, Encouragement, and Inspiration OverviewAccording to Sharon Draper, 1997 Teacher of the Year, teaching is a vocation, not a job, and those who teach need to be reminded of the importance of the work they do. That is exactly what Teaching from the Heart does-offering inspiration and encouragement for anyone who may have lost sight of the rewards of the profession.
Teaching from the Heart is neither a reference book nor a study guide; it is a book of gems to hold on to when a teacher's world seems to be nothing but rocks. It features uplifting essays, conversations, and poems that can provide a needed boost during a hurried lunch hour or between classes. The treatment is light, friendly, and understanding. It is the kind of book that a mentor teacher passes on to a student teacher, or a college professor assigns to his or her students as they begin their own teaching careers. It is the kind of book that will be cherished and shared by all teachers as well as anyone who has ever dreamed of becoming a teacher.

A Simple Justice: The Challenge of Small Schools (Teaching for Social Justice Series) ReviewI emphatically agree with the book's central message: Small schools are greatly preferable to large. (I went through public school in L.A.; I should know.)
The book gives many wonderful examples of how small schools have revolutionized education in a number of places where public schools had been failing their students. The authors were among those dedicated enough to see through the building, running, and nurturing of such places of learning.
The book also gave a glimpse of what education is meant to be-- intense investigation, asking endless series of questions addressing issues of student interest, a process of learning for teacher as well as student--and contrasted this with what goes on in a typical factory-model school. Hurrah!
Unfortunately, the book made two glaring omissions (thus the four stars, not five). First, there was extremely little discussion of the resources needed to make this happen, and the corresponding lack of political will. It is easy to point out that wealthy school districts think $12,000 a student-year is an appropriate amount to spend for top-flight education, and that the special needs of poor districts suggest that even more is needed there. (And this is still mostly using the factory- model school for middle and high school.) But it is another thing altogether to develop a political strategy to deal with the discrepancies.
Second, I believe that the factory-model school is actually failing almost everyone, not just the poor in the city. Ideals of education are met no better in Novato, CA, than in Oakland. School is an impersonal waste of time in Novato, too. Issues of social justice are nowhere on the radar screen there, either. Kids go to "civics" class, biology, etc. Curriculum never changes, kids do not get to develop major educational programs based on their interests.
We need to find ways of encouraging everyone to engage in a discussion of social justice. Reagan and his welfare queen, Bush and Willie Horton, and years of perverse race-based criminal justice approaches (most notably the war on drugs), have set us back immeasurably. Milton Friedman has won; all the progressive tax systems are being whittled back; social services--from health care to welfare to, you guessed it, public education--are on the out.
Everyone should be in on this mission. I think the book speaks far too narrowly to the inner city and not broadly enough. (An important question here is whether we are asking city schools to perform wildly different functions from suburban schools, and if so, whether this is serving either of these populations.)A Simple Justice: The Challenge of Small Schools (Teaching for Social Justice Series) OverviewThis collection of essays identifies the ways in which school restructuring strategies connect to the ongoing pursuit of social justice. The contributors are educators and advocates for youth, who think that changing schools can change the world.

Engaging the Eye Generation: Visual Literacy Strategies for the K-5 Classroom ReviewThis book strikes the right balance between practical, technical and engaging. I appreciate the simple explanations for those of us who are not especially tech savvy and the pragmatic approach to using technology for a modern curriculum. The graphics in the book are helpful and make a difficult subject more accessible. I honestly need to read it again to steal some ideas!Engaging the Eye Generation: Visual Literacy Strategies for the K-5 Classroom OverviewLiteracy in the twenty-first century means more than just reading and writing. Today's students must learn how to interpret and communicate information through a variety of digital and print-based media formats, usingimagery, online applications, audio, video, and traditional texts. In Engaging the Eye Generation, library media specialist and National Board Certified Teacher Johanna Riddle draws on twenty-five years of education experience to show teachers how to update the curriculum for twenty-first century learners. Technology neophytes need not despair. Johanna suggests enhancements ranging from low-tech to high-tech and explains how teachers, even those with limited technology skills, can effectively guide students to proficiency. Each chapter—filled with meaningful and motivating activities—thoughtfully explains how to elevate traditional learning and add new layers to students' reading comprehension, critical thinking, and communication skills. Through proven methods and practical examples, teachers will discover how to: · use multiple literacies to weave togetherstandards and disciplines; · identify and apply appropriate tools to ensure relevant information literacy; · integrate information and research skills; and · design rubrics collaboratively with students so all learners can effectively assess the learning process. To help students meet the challenges of a rapidly evolving world, teachers must become comfortable in the twenty-first-century learning community. Engaging the Eye Generation isaccessible, manageable, and inspiring; it will help teachers bridge the generational gap with enthusiasm and savvy. Engaging the Eye Generation takes a fresh approach to infusing twenty-first century skills into the classroom. In addition to practical examples of lessons and units, Johanna shares her own learning process, which will allow the reader to easily adopt the best practices outlined in the book] Her attention to sound pedagogical practices, with an emphasis on both visual and information literacy, will support teachers as they move their students toward the skills they will need to succeed! —Kathy Schrock, Creator of Kathy Schrock's Guide for Educatorsand Administrator for Technology for the Nauset Public School

Small Victories: The Real World of a Teacher, Her Students, and Their High School ReviewI found Small Victories to be a text of incredible value for the even-handed way that it lays out the profound problems facing the New York City Public School system-- from the exhaustingly ponderous beaurocracy and latent racism of the Board of Education to the extreme poverty and violence that surrounds the students all of the time. Freedman cuts back and forth between sections of personal narrative and the political and social history of the Lower East Side so that you really gain an understanding of the way that many of these problem has been created and maintained by the education system over such a long period of time that overcoming them may be quite difficult. The story of Jessica Siegal, the teacher profiled in the book, is one of amazing courage and dedication that sinks into a depressing story of insurmountable obstacles such as uninterested politicians, bitter, lazy educators, and rampant poverty. The small victories that she achieves are incredible and important but are so far from remedying the very real problems of the school system, which short changes so many thousands of students in so many ways, that it is hard not to be left with a sinking feeling that the large failures of the system that surrounds Siegal just might swallow up the pride and drive off the teachers like her who perservere. Though this may be incredibly depressing it is a story that needs to be told and I applaud Freedman for tackling such a difficult topic with such a keen eye and unrelenting dedication to the truth.Small Victories: The Real World of a Teacher, Her Students, and Their High School Overview

Teaching Through the Storm: A Journal of Hope (The Practitioner Inquiry Series) ReviewI read this book because I was considering using it in a college level diversity issues class that I teach for teachers and those preparing to be teachers. Once I read it, I knew that I would have to use it; I couldn't put it down! It was like a great novel. Hankins reminded me of the importance of truly listening to students and knowing them. That is an important message for teachers at any level. Plus her meditations on journal writings as data for qualiative research are fascinating. I recommend this book for anyone who could use a little inspiration.Teaching Through the Storm: A Journal of Hope (The Practitioner Inquiry Series) OverviewThis title describes the dilemmas of classroom life in an attempt to provide a counterpoint to those who have spun education and politics together as if platforms were solutions. It presents an insider perspective on the buoyant hopes of teachers and the sometimes stark realities they face.

Activating the Desire to Learn ReviewThis is a nice short read. It's about "internal control psycology." I don't like that term because of the word "control." Change that to "motivation" and it's positive and still about the same idea. This book is about creating internal motivation in students. That part is great.
What I'm not so thrilled about is that all over the book it's continually saying things like, "once you understand internal control psychology everything will be great." Ok, but it never really seems to go into the specifics of fostering internal motivation. Sure, there are some examples and a few specific strategies. There are even some chapters that really bring to light some very effective practices. But overall this is not the book to start with as far as internal motivation goes.
The author does cite his inspiration for writing this book. Perhaps that other book would be a better place to start. I'm sure this book is a good companion once you know more about "internal control psychology."
Having said all that on the negative side, I am finding this book useful to some degree.Activating the Desire to Learn OverviewThe research is indisputable: Students are less disruptive and do better academically in schools that cultivate the internal motivation of students. In Activating the Desire to Learn, veteran educator Bob Sullo shows how to apply lessons from the research on motivation in the classroom.According to the author, we are all driven to fulfill five essential needs: to connect, to be competent, to make choices, to have fun, and to be safe. Studies show that when these needs are met in schools, good behavior and high achievement tend naturally to ensue. Written as a series of candid dialogues between the author and K–12 students, teachers, counselors, and administrators, Activating the Desire to Learn covers everything you need to know to change the dynamics of learning in your classroom or school:* A comprehensive overview of the research on internal motivation;* Case studies of strategies for activating internal motivation at the elementary, middle, and high school levels;* Suggestions on how to assess degrees of student motivation; and* Guidelines for integrating the principles of internal motivation with standards-based instruction.Motivating students is not the issue—the hunger to learn is ever-present. Yet schools continue to insist on the traditional reward-punishment model, to the detriment of student achievement. Clearly it's time for change. This engaging and thought-provoking book will help you create a culture of achievement by building on the inherent drive to succeed that students bring to the classroom every day.

In the Company of Children ReviewThis book was probably the best read of all the education books I've read. As a new teacher, everyone has an opinion on how things should be. JoAnne Hindley's approach is a model for me, one that I hope to live up to.It just makes sense. In the Company of Children Overview
In schools of every description, teachers are working to turn their classrooms into reading-writing workshops. They're filling bookcases with the best of childrens literature, and students are tucking writers' notebooks into their bulging backpacks.

This new look calls for meaningful change in teaching practice, but many questions about implementing literacy workshops remain. In this clear and practical book, Joanne Hindley takes a hard look at how to make every minute count and offers specific suggestions for creating rigorous, efficient, and successful reading and writing workshops.

Grounding her story in the lives of her third graders, Joanne tackles difficult issues and offers thoughtful direction and ideas you will appreciate:how to manage a productive workshop setting in a crowded classroom;how to launch writer's notebooks with your students;how the study of one genre can help you manage the reading/writing workshop;where to get ideas for mini-lessons for the reading/writing workshop;guidelines to help you improve your conferring with individual readers and writers;how to assess student progress in a process-oriented classroom. In the Company of Children is a treasure trove of fresh ideas and strategies that teachers-in service and preservice-will draw on and adapt for their own classrooms.

First Time Up: An Insider's Guide for New Composition Teachers ReviewFirst Time Up: An Insider's Guide For Composition Teachers by Brock Dethier (Coordinator of Advanced Composition at Utah State University) is an in-depth and instructive presentation reflecting the values which may be placed on effectively teaching composition in the classroom for first-time writing instructors. Tactfully written in an encouraging, humorous, yet appropriately informative manner, First Time Up documents the often difficult experience of teaching contemporary college students and recommends what processes would be most appropriate in dealing with student maturity and academic preparedness issues. As a truly well written, experienced based, and "user friendly" guide First Time Up is to be given high praise and is very strongly recommended reading -- especially for novice English teachers and professors of college level students.
First Time Up: An Insider's Guide for New Composition Teachers Overview"First time up?"—an insider's friendly question from 1960s counter-culture—perfectly captures the spirit of this book. A short, supportive, practical guide for the first-time college composition instructor, the book is upbeat, wise but friendly, casual but knowledgeable (like the voice that may have introduced you to certain other firsts). With an experiential focus rather than a theoretical one, First Time Up will be a strong addition to the newcomer's professional library, and a great candidate for the TA practicum reading list.Dethier, author of The Composition Instructor's Survival Guide and From Dylan to Donne, directly addresses the common headaches, nightmares, and epiphanies of composition teaching—especially the ones that face the new teacher. And since legions of new college composition teachers are either graduate instructors (TAs) or adjuncts without a formal background in composition studies, he assumes these folks as his primary audience. Dethier's voice is casual, but it conveys concern, humor, experience, and reassurance to the first-timer. He addresses all major areas that graduate instructors or new adjuncts in a writing program are sure to face, from career anxiety to thoughts on grading and keeping good classroom records. Dethier's own eclecticism is well-represented here, but he reviews with considerable deftness the value of contemporary scholarship to first-time writing instructors—many of whom will be impatient with high theory. Throughout the work, he affirms a humane, confident approach to teaching, along with a true affection for college students and for teachers just learning to deal with them.

The Church As Learning Community: A Comprehensive Guide to Christian Education ReviewThis book will make you significantly smarter at your next education committee meeting! Ok, well...maybe not at your next meeting- as it is a dense and detailed, idea packed book close to 400 pages- but it will expand your ideas about education in a church environment.
I hate to be caught using the phrase "something for everyone", but it really does apply here. Not only that, Everist includes many things for anyone: most of the material seems likely to enrich any person involved in church education (a group of people which is expanded to include everyone who walks in the doors of the church, by the way.) It is a vast storehouse of practical methods and ideas for every age group, some of which are laid out in a convenient diagram format. Norma Cook Everist explores life stages, ways the community is organized, who is included in the community, and sets out many ideas for education in all of these contexts.
One criticism I have involves the flip side of this book's great strength- the volume of the material presented. It is very detailed and expansive. If you are looking for an easy-read manual that can be thumbed through at meetings when an educational issue arises, don't buy book. In order to utilize its riches, one needs to commit to it and spend time slowly becoming familiar with the content. Trying to skim through or read quickly may result in frustration, and abandoning the effort. (So, you may not have anything for your education committee meeting tomorrow... but next month? Watch out!!)
Another characteristic that might be a problem is the congregational ethos it quite obviously springs from. Parts of this model include church functions (committee structure, liturgy, curriculum, sacraments, the use of the word "parish" and the sometimes-assumption that there is a community of connected churches) that are found more often in mainline, liturgical churches than in a more fluid evangelical or non-denominational approach in which those elements are less important or not present in the same way. However, there are only a very few theological assumptions that affect the curriculum in ways that might cause a problem. The way that baptism is part of Everist's foundation for our congregational responsibility to educate one another might change meanings or create a stumbling block for congregations that practice only adult baptism. Other issues, such as the emphasis on community and civic involvement as part of our educational process (which is an emphasis found more often in mainline churches) add a wonderful richness to the book in taking our responsibility for educating outside the church walls. These differences in perspective are certainly nothing to fear. The sheer volume of information and diversity of the resources within this book (the great majority of which carry no denomination-specific doctrinal claims) assure that it will be a rich resource for anyone. Overall, this is a wonderful book for those serious about education in a church setting. The Church As Learning Community: A Comprehensive Guide to Christian Education Overview
Click here to read a free chapterNorma Cook Everist contends that it is meaningful to say that in ministries of administration, outreach, and pastoral care, the church is functioning as a learning community. Whenever and wherever Christians are being formed into the image of Jesus Christ through ministry, there Christian education is taking place. Christian education is the name we give to that process of formation.

Building on this central insight, Everist has written a major new introduction to the tasks and practices of Christian education. Part 1 of the book focuses broadly on what it means to be the church in the world. Part 2 shows how being a learning community requires ongoing growth in faith throughout the span of life. Part 3 shifts focus to the church as it moves into the community and world.

Mastering the Techniques of Teaching ReviewI was turned onto this great book by a former instructor in pedagogy, whom I felt was a great teacher in his own right, a relevant and profound authority, and I am ever grateful.
Lowman begins from this definition: "A classroom is an emotionally charged interpersonal arena in which a wide range of psychological phenomena occur." Also, he begins with a challenge: "Beyond a solid mastery of one's subject, college teaching of the highest order appears to be a complex task requiring the ability of communicate well with students, whether in large or small groups or in formal or informal settings, and to relate to them as people in ways they find positive and motivating."
The classroom is thus a diverse, and ever changing series of contexts for human action, reflecting the blossoming of relationships between teacher and students. As teachers, we want to inspire. But, in order to achieve this end, we must pursue a rational approach. We must adhere to specific, tested strategies and principles. Lowman's strength is in his ability to chart in clear and ordered contours a path to recognition of the best course of action to be taken in each given context to achieve maximum student motivation. He establishes the instructional qualities that have, over time, been proven to comprise exemplary teaching and proceeds to demonstrate how they can be developed.
The text is well-organized in 10 chapters which outline these qualities in progression: 1)What Constitutes Exemplary Teaching? 2)Understanding Classroom Dynamics 3) Developing Interpersonal Skills and Teaching Style 4)Analyzing and Improving Classroom Performance 5)Selecting and Organizing Material for Classroom Presentations 6)Enhancing Learning Through Classroom Discussion 7)Planning Course Content and Teaching Techniques to Maximize Interest 8)Integrating Learning In and Out of the Classroom 9) Evaluating Student Performance 10)The Art, Craft, and Techniques of Exemplary Teaching.
He references a number of interesting sources, of which two impressed me as being of primary importance: the 1970 Mann Group Study and a book by Duffy and Jones, entitled 'Teaching Within the Rhythms of the Semester' (1995). Although I'm not crazy about typologies, I found the Mann Group findings truly helpful in dealing with the continual flux of people that come to my classroom, each with varying presuppositions, life challenges, and diverse backgrounds, which must be sorted and dealt with quickly and effectively in creating positive learning environments. The Mann typing of students gives a quick and accurate paradigm for categorizing behavior which I've found very useful for building community in the classroom.
Lowman's ability to apply pedogagic studies such as these to specific contexts that arise in the course of instruction puts the methodology of teaching on a series of grids - which have the cumulative effect of locating for the aspiring teacher an easily referenced modus operandi which leads to classroom success. His masterful, accessible, and graphlike insights have helped me organize my teaching and classroom presence as no other work I've read on a skill set - in the use of which one can never improve oneself enough.
Well worth the investment for any prospective college instructor - comprehensive - all the essentials of instructor and student performance and interaction are discussed with concision and depth - and useful strategies for engaging virtually any situation arising in the classroom emerge. If you have funds for one guide to professional teaching - get this one.Mastering the Techniques of Teaching OverviewNow in Paperback!"Masterfully balancing the practitioner's need for concrete suggestions and the scholar's quest for intriguing ideas, this book offers tips to be tried in class tomorrow and ideas to be mused on for months."--Maryellen Weimer, professor, Penn State University-Berks Campus"I have used the first edition of Joe Lowman's book for years and found it most helpful. The new edition is a must for teachers and faculty developers."--Milt Cox, University Director for Teaching Effectivness Programs, Miami UniversityIn this second edition of his classic resource, Joseph Lowman expands on his earlier model of effective teaching to place greater emphasis on motivational skill and commitment to teaching. He presents a practical new learning model that compares six sources of influence on what and how students learn in a college course. All types of teachers and instructors will discover options on how to organize classes and use group work to promote learning. They will also find a checklist for assessing their classroom performance on video, detailed instructions for using video analysis to improve their technique, and an innovative approach to evaluating their overall performance.

Mentoring New Teachers ReviewI am responsible for overseeing the implementation and maintenance of several important aspects of the Management Information System for a large multi-national company. Among other things, my job involves training and mentoring a sizable staff of MIS specialists; some veterans, others new to the field or to our company. Although I am not a teacher, I read "Mentoring New Teachers" by Hal Portner hoping to gain some insights on how to do this part of my job. Since many of the discussions, exercises and tips in the book seemed to relate directly to my situation, I decided to try them out. I was not disappointed! Especially useful were the chapters that dealt with establishing and maintaining productive mentoring relationship, and on how to coach employees in such a way that they gain the confidence and understandings to act productively on their own. I expect "Mentoring New Teachers" is very helpful to teachers, but I also highly recommend Portner's book as a "must read" to my counterparts in the private sector.Mentoring New Teachers OverviewThis latest edition draws upon research to illustrate essential mentoring behaviors. Provides new tools such as classroom observation methods, teacher mentor standards, and learning styles assessment.
