It opens your eyes to understanding your role as a teacher and how the stereotypes we bring with us may affect our effectiveness as teachers. I recommend this book to everyone trying to understand how to effectively teach a diversity of students to reach their full potential.Because of the Kids : Facing Racial and Cultural Differences in Schools (Practitioner Inquiry, 18) OverviewHere, the authors recount how they set out on a collaborative three-year study to explore the impact of racial and cultural differences in one of their urban, middle school classrooms. The Seventh Generation: Native Students Speak About Finding the Good Path ReviewHello
I am currently re-reading "The Seventh Generation, Native Students Speak About Finding the Good Path" by Amy Bergstrom, Linda Miller Cleary, and Thomas D. Peacock. Written as a textbook for Native students in j.h and h.s, Seventh Generation goes far beyond these perimeters and offers educators a fascinating exploration into the lives of Native American youth and their attitudes/approaches towards life and education. Seventh Generation also suggests educational ideas and methods to help Native students meet success.
My favorite thing about Seventh Generation?...It's written by both students and educators who share mutual respect for their cultures and each other.
Gina Boltz, Director
Native Village Publications...The Seventh Generation: Native Students Speak About Finding the Good Path OverviewThis book is based on interviews with 120 Native youth from across North America. Written especially for today's Native middle and high school students, the authors share students' stories of life's challenges and their struggles to find and stay on the Good Path. They focus especially on how students developed strong Native identities; coped with troubles in their families, communities, and schools; reached their breaking points or responded resiliently to high-pressure situations; learned to appreciate their own intellectual gifts and abilities; and met the academic and social challenges they encountered in school. Interspersed throughout the book are short fictional "teaching stories" meant to illustrate common dilemmas faced by Native youth and how the characters responded.

Creating Highly Motivating Classrooms for All Students: A Schoolwide Approach to Powerful Teaching with Diverse Learners ReviewThe authors present a school wide approach to teaching in our public schools where student diversity prevails in all ways - academic, socioeconomic, cultural, behavioral etc. This book is for you if you are a teacher, administrator or parent.
For our education professionals, it will help your school chart a course toward school improvement with a focus on staff development and tapping into student's own desire to learn. It includes specific strategies you can use in the classroom and in working with staff. Their approach is not a quick fix, but requires a long term, intentional commitment to improve teachers teaching and students learning. The authors bring hope to the process, yet their approach recognizes and addresses real constraints and impediments to school improvement and how to address these roadblocks. This book is valuable for parents too. The authors' descriptons of successful teacher moments, classroom environments and teaching strategies will help parents evaluate their childrens' educational experiences. It will help you identify when an effective, creative teacher is teaching your child and provide insight as to why. It will help you broaden your understanding of what "good" teaching is all about and help determine what school improvements efforts deserve your support.Creating Highly Motivating Classrooms for All Students: A Schoolwide Approach to Powerful Teaching with Diverse Learners Overview"Ginsberg and Wlodkowski each bring a lifetime of knowledge and experience to this book. Their passion for the learning of all students and teachers and their commitment to equity shine through its chapters. They clearly understand the challenges of teaching an increasingly diverse student body and they provide teachers and principals with practical, proven ways to motivate the learning of both students and teachers."--Dennis Sparks, executive director, National Staff Development Council"There is nothing so useful as good theory informed by years of great teaching and a commitment to empowering education for all students. Ginsberg and Wlodkowski bring all that and more to this very useful and hopeful resource. Highly recommAnded to any educator!"--Beverly Daniel Tatum, dean and professor of psychology and education, Mount Holyoke College, Massachusetts, and author of Why Are All the Black Kids Sitting Together in the Cafeteria? This volume is based on the dual notion that all students are motivated to learn and that the role of teachers is to encourage, elicit, and support this desire to learn. Now education professionals have a practical guide to teaching students of different cultures and ethnic backgrounds. Whether you are a teacher, administrator, staff developer, teacher educator, or district officer, this comprehensive resource provides tools for developing, implementing, and maintaining a culturally responsive system of teaching in any classroom or school. The authors draw from a synthesis of research and literature on learning theories, cultural studies, and teaching practice to describe the components of a culturally responsive school and pedagogy. They also develop practical strategies for applying The Motivational Framework for Culturally Responsive Teaching. In addition to case studies, sample lessons, and field-tested activities, the book presents guidelines to help organize school improvement initiatives, design professional development agAndas, and conceptualize an effective method of evaluation.
