The New Science of Teaching and Learning: Using the Best of Mind, Brain, and Education Science in the Classroom ReviewTracey Tokuhama-Espinosa has given us a popularized version of the research and new learning we have regarding neuroscience, learning theory, and cognitive psychology. There is little new here except for the admonition that we should be careful in our assumptions. However, I believe she makes some big leaps of application in some of her recommendations for teachers and applications of the research. Most of her recommendations apply to using the new understandings and ideas in the traditional, behavioral conditioned classroom. I believe it is time for us to stop reinforcing this model of teaching and learning, and using the new research and understanding about how people learn, design classrooms, and teaching strategies that are compatible.
The most strident example of this "boxed" thinking comes in her defense of homework! That question has been tried and found wanting, but Ms. Tokuhama-Espinosa still clings to the practice, and tries to justify it with the new research. This is an injustice to the research and to the teaching profession. The New Science of Teaching and Learning: Using the Best of Mind, Brain, and Education Science in the Classroom OverviewThis book offers a definitive, scientifically grounded guide for better teaching and learning practices. Drawing from thousands of documents and the opinions of recognized experts worldwide, it explains in straight talk the new Mind, Brain, and Education Science, a field that has grown out of the intersection of neuroscience, education, and psychology. While parents and teachers are often bombarded with promises of a better brain, this book distinguishes true, applicable neuroscience from the popular neuromyths that have gained currency in education. Each instructional guideline presented in the book is accompanied by real-life classroom examples to help teachers envision the direct application of the information in their own schools. The author offers essential tools for evaluating new information as it flows from research and adds to what we know. Written by a teacher for teachers, this easy-to-use resource documents the findings of the top experts in the field of neuroscience, psychology, and education. It addresses the confusion around the misuse of concepts in brain-based education, and applies well-substantiated findings about the brain to classroom practice and teaching."This seminal book has the potential to change the way we think about teaching and learning." -From the Foreword by Pat Wolfe, educational consultant, Mind Matters, Inc."This is not only an excellent guide for teachers and a most-needed review of the cutting edge research on neuroeducation, but also a model of pedagogy. The author guides readers step by step in the fascinating exploration of the new transdisciplinary field called MBE, Mind, Brain and Education Science. I recommend this book to every teacher. It will clarify many issues and promote many educational initiatives." -Antonio M. Battro, M.D., President of IMBES, International Mind, Brain and Education Society"Tracey Tokuhama-Espinosa has written a highly accessible, extraordinarily well-documented compilation of essential information for all educators. This breakthrough book guides informed decision-making using the best science has to offer to return joy and authentic learning to our classrooms." -Judy Willis, M.D., M.Ed., neurologist, middle-school teacher, author, and renowned speaker on brain-based education "A fascinating review of state-of-the-art research. It does more than just debunk myths, it also points toward tried and true tenets and principles of education. Written with clarity, freshness, and a sense of urgency, this is a book that every educator-and everyone who cares about children-should read." -Craig Pohlman, author of How Can My Kid Succeed in School and Revealing Minds

Metaphors & Analogies: Power Tools for Teaching Any Subject ReviewThis book helped me approach a subject I thought I would never be able to incorporate into my middle school math and science classroom. What Rick did was unbelievable because he cracked open the secrets of teaching metaphors...giving me bite size pieces that I could easily integrate into what I already do.
As I read each chapter, I read about nuanced ways to go about using metaphors which deepen the understanding of my students and make them think more broadly. Honestly I hadn't thought about most of what this book has to offer....and usually it's the other way around. I think buying books wastes my money because I don't get that much out of them. While it sounds very trite, I think I learned something new and applicable on almost every page I read.Metaphors & Analogies: Power Tools for Teaching Any Subject OverviewMetaphors & Analogies: Power Tools for Teaching Any Subject--This text refers to the Kindle Edition edition.

A Rhetoric of Argument: Text and Reader ReviewI used this text as a college student, and I still refer to it. I dig it out and do a little refreshing now and then. The clarity of the descriptions, the helpfulness of the excercises, and the inside view of argument are all very good reasons to purchase this book and hold on to it. The only quibble I have is the student emphasis. Now that I'm no longer a student I find myself wishing that the excercises didn't include collegisms. No matter. This is still an excellent introductory text.A Rhetoric of Argument: Text and Reader OverviewThe stasis approach pioneered by Fahnestock and Secor distinguishes among four basic questions that arguments are written to answer:What is it? (Definition arguments)How did it get that way?(Causal arguments)Is it good or bad?(Evaluation arguments)What should we do about it?(Proposal arguments) These four questions, now standard in many argument texts, give students a constructive, engaging way to analyze arguments by other writers and to construct their own arguments.

Speak Out: Debate and Public Speaking in the Middle Grades ReviewSpeak Out! Debate and Public Speaking in the Middle Grades serves as a debate bible for the overworked innovative teacher. The authors do an excellent job of creating a user friendly book for both middle school students and their teachers. Although I have taught middle school debate for over ten years, I found myself saying "ah-ha" at an alarming rate while reading. When I think of this book, two things stand out the most. The book provides a number of creative activities aimed at giving students the opportunity to practice all of the fundamentals of debate. Secondly, the authors do a masterful job of addressing two of the most difficult concepts to teach, argumentation and refutation. Most of the books on debate I have encountered require a PhD. to understand the meat and potatoes of debate, argumentation and refutation, but Speak Out!...scaffolds these concepts and provides ample opportunity for student mastery. As a battle tested teacher that has been in the trenches for a number of years, Speak Out! is a breath of fresh air in today's stormy educational climate. My only regret is I wish I purchased a copy sooner.Speak Out: Debate and Public Speaking in the Middle Grades Overview

Inquiry-Based English Instruction : Engaging Students in Life and Literature ReviewI recommend this book to teachers hoping to energize their literature or writing classes by positioning all students as creative, ambitious researchers capable of critiquing or even transforming worlds outside the classroom. When I discovered it two months ago, it struck me as just the resource I needed for revitalizing my college survey of multicultural literature for freshman and sophomores, a course which sometimes engaged and sometimes bored students. I have since redesigned materials for the course, using Beach and Myers' idea that to fully understand literature-or our own lives-we must think of individual people (whether characters in a story, authors of those stories, or ourselves and others in the real world) as part of larger systems or "social worlds," acting to protect and continue those systems or to challenge and change them. The book clearly delineates the components of social worlds and is full of sample activities and assignments; with these, I have revised my own discussion questions, presentation assignments and writing prompts. I have also shown Chapter 8, "School and Sports Worlds," to several high school teachers, who now plan to assign the ethnographic inquiry projects outlined there rather than assigning traditional research papers. This is a practical, accessible, entirely useable book.Inquiry-Based English Instruction : Engaging Students in Life and Literature Overview
This valuable resource offers an alternative framework for middle and secondary school English instruction. The authors provide concrete strategies for engaging students in critical inquiry projects about the social worlds they inhabit or about those portrayed in literature and the media, their peer, school, family, romance, community, workplace, and virtual worlds.

You will find numerous examples of middle and high school students using various literacy tools (language, genres, narratives, signs, multimedia, and drama) to study, represent, critique, and transform these worlds. Rather than simply studying about literacy practices, this new framework shows how students learn best through active participation driven by a need to critically examine and promote changes in their social worlds.

Connections: Activities for Deductive Thinking (Introductory) ReviewI bought this book to use with my talented and gifted students. Currently my students are in a multi-age group of third through fifth graders. This book says it's for 3rd-4th graders but I have found it to be fairly advanced. We needed some easier problems first and are working through the problems in here together rather than independently.Connections: Activities for Deductive Thinking (Introductory) OverviewThese imaginative puzzles are the pinnacle of this classic series designed to sharpen deductive reasoning skills and strengthen the ability to sort through information by formulating connections. Created with the classroom teacher in mind, these puzzles are both intriguing and easy to fit into lesson plans for the gifted and talented, as well as many main course curriculums. Designed for teachers frustrated with complicated logic exercises that are beyond the scope of one class period, Connections are formatted for success within 50-minute pullout programs. Each puzzle includes an introduction, clues, grid, and an illustration. Many educators have found Connections the best exercise to introduce deductive reasoning skills while enhancing enthusiasm. Exercises are simple to use and gradually present ever-increasing challenges. The thinking skills introduced dovetail easily into other aspects of the curriculum. Capture students' attention and challenge their intellectual talents with this first-rate series. The size of the grids is an indication of difficulty. For higher grades or gifted and advanced classes, check out the rest of this series Connections - Beginning , Connections - Intermediate and Connections - Advanced. Grades 2–4
