Manhattan Directory of Private Nursery Schools, 6th Ed. ReviewSadly, if you have a small child in Manhattan, you probably need this book. The best I can say for it is that it is thorough. Although the book claims that it is the only source for information not written by the schools themselves, it might as well be by the schools themselves. Don't expect the book to make any judgements about any schools. This text simply presents the information in the way that the schools' promotional literature presents it. No judgements are made.
The authors have clearly "drunk the kool-aid" on the whole admissions process, as well. There is no healthy discussion as to whether interviewing 3 year olds is sensible or desireable. The book simply gives you the raw material to help you throw fuel on the fire that is the private preschool racket in NYC.
This inability to question itself or laugh at itself comes out in the prose as well-- resulting in accidental humor. Over and over again the reader is subjected to sentences such as: "Preschool activities include... blockbuilding (to discover math and aesthetic concepts)." Wow. Thanks for explaining that.
Cloying prose aside, the book would benefit from a kind of time-table. Most parents really want to know "WHAT do I need to do, and WHEN do I need to do it?" For example, under admissions, it often says "applications are given out in mid September" when the reality is that if you don't call for the application the Tuesday morning after Labor Day, you will not receive one! THAT would be some useful information.Manhattan Directory of Private Nursery Schools, 6th Ed. Overview"A comprehensive guide."—The New York TimesThis guide, now in its sixth edition, is the accepted authority on nursery school options available to Manhattan parents, and includes a listing of other resources. It describes more than 150 nursery and daycare programs, detailing information on admissions procedures, diversity, school size, tuition, and schedules. Victoria Goldman is often quoted in the media for her expertise in private education. She is the author of The Manhattan Family Guide to Private Schools, 5th Edition, as well as The Los Angeles Guide to Private Schools.

Montessori Madness A Parent to Parent Argument for Montessori Education ReviewI love this book. Trevor Eissler has an easy, conversational writing style, and a gift for translating academic jargon into something useful. He walks readers right into the Montessori classroom and provides the details they crave when trying to compare schools, programs, and philosophies. As a great storyteller with a sense of humor, he entertains as he enlightens. The book is packed with meaty anecdotes and the best of what critics and educators have had to say on the subject of school reform. It held my attention from the first eight word opening sentence to the very last page.
Montessori Madness! not only discusses what's gone wrong in other schools, but also identifies what exactly about the Montessori classroom goes so delightfully right. It inspires parents to experiment and innovate and actively participate in the design of the education of their children. My sense is that Montessori Madness! began as a father's private investigation and evolved into a call to action. I have not found another book out there that gets to the heart of the Montessori education like this book does. Thank you, Trevor Eissler, for a great offering.
Montessori Madness A Parent to Parent Argument for Montessori Education OverviewWe know we need to improve our traditional school system, both public and private. But how? More homework? Better-qualified teachers? Longer school days or school years? More testing? More funding? No, no, no, no, and no. Montessori Madness! explains why the incremental steps politicians and administrators continue to propose are incremental steps in the wrong direction. The entire system must be turned on its head. This book asks parents to take a look one thirty-minute observation at a Montessori school. Your picture of what education should look like will never be the same.Montessori Madness! follows one family with young children on their journey of determination, discovery, and delight. Learn the who, what, when, where, why, and how of Montessori education. This book makes an aggressive, humorous, and passionate case for a brilliant method of education that has received too little attention, very likely because it is based on a revolutionary, dangerous, and shocking concept: children love to learn!

Working in the Reggio Way: A Beginner's Guide for American Teachers ReviewAs someone who has been to visit the schools in Reggio Emilia and has studied the Reggio Approach with a large group of co-learners, I have to say that I find this book very disappointing in its ability to explain the municipal infant/toddler and preprimary schools of Reggio Emilia in a way that remains true to what they are. Granted, the task of explaining is very difficult given the huge and fundamental differences between the Reggio Emilia schools and the early childhood programs in the United States. Even so, there are much better resources for those interested in learning about and applying ideas from Reggio Emilia. Try "The Hundred Languages of Children: The Reggio Emilia Approach Advanced Reflections, Second Edition" or "Making Learning Visible: Children as Individual and Group Learners." These two books remain true to what Reggio is. They, in a sense, translate ideas from Italian into English instead of translating ideas from Reggio into American, which is the mistake made by the authors of "Working in the Reggio Way." While the two recommendations I have given are considerably more expensive than "Working in the Reggio Way" and considerably more challenging to read, the money you pay for the book and the time and effort that you and your co-learners put into understanding Reggio represents an intelligent and lucrative investment that will pay off greatly for you. There is no shortcut to Reggio. Any book that claims to be for beginners or to be easy or is offered cheaply should be approached with great caution, and will most likely lead the reader through familiar American paths of early childhood rather than truly transporting her across the seas to the Reggio Emilia experience.Working in the Reggio Way: A Beginner's Guide for American Teachers Overview
Working in the Reggio Way helps teachers of young children bring the innovative practices of the schools in Reggio Emilia, Italy, to American classrooms. Written by an educator who observed and worked in the world-famous schools, this groundbreaking resource presents the key tools that will allow American teachers to transform their classrooms, including these:

Organization of time and space Documentation of children's work Observation and questioning Attention to children's environments

This workbook also contains interactive activities for individual or group reflection.

Julianne Wurm works as an instructional reform facilitator in the San Francisco Unified School District. She lives in San Francisco, California.
