Heart Advice from a Mahamudra Master ReviewI first encountered the name of Lama Gendun Rinpoche during a retreat in the US in 1994 when the retreat leader posted Gendun Rinpoche's vajra song "Happiness" on the bulletin board. This song of realization made a deep impression on me, and I was curious to learn more about this lama. But during the next 14 years I never again heard his name mentioned in North America - he as yet appears to be practically unknown there. Then, three years ago, I came across a German compilation of teachings of this intriguing lama. I read through it practically non-stop and decided that I had to translate this gem and make it available to English-speaking Dharma students who knew nothing about this Lama. Eventually, this was accomplished, and the result is this book. The proceeds from its sale go to the publisher and will be used to finance the publication of additional Dharma books.
Why was I so much taken by Gendun Rinpoche? Well, he really got through to me. He completely disarmed me; there was no escaping from the gentle power of his persuasion and from accepting the truth of what he teaches. The central themes of his book are bodhicitta, i.e., generating the mind of awakening and using its force to work for the benefit of all beings, and Mahamudra, the recognition of the true nature of our mind and the ability through that recognition to extract ourselves from the endless cycle of confusion, meaninglessness and suffering that we are all trapped in and ultimately attain true happiness and peace of mind.
This book brought about a transformation of my consciousness that despite more than 10 years of nearly exclusive, intensive preocupation with the teachings and practice of Tibetan Buddhism, which also included more than 3 years in solitary retreat, had remained unripe. I've found Gendun Rinpoche's teachings utterly persuasive and have come to completely entrust myself to his wisdom. What is most important, he continually motivates me to be serious about practice.
I believe the essential thing that makes a book of Buddhist teachings truly helpful and transformative is the actual accomplishment or realization of the person who wrote it and the degree to which their buddha mind clearly radiates from the printed page. When both of these things are present in an unusual measure, as they are in the case of Gendun Rinpoche, then there can be a genuine transmission of the blessings of the lineage, even from the book alone.
This book offers a very accessible distillation of all the teachings and practices whose veracity and effectiveness Gendun Rinpoche had proved to himself in his own experience and that he deemed essential for his Western students. There is everything in these 300 pages that we need as practitioners, and when we practice it, we will come home to ourselves.
The essence of Gendun Rinpoche's teachings was well expressed in his vajra song "Happiness":
Happiness cannot be found
through great effort and will,
but is already there, perfect and complete,
in relaxation and letting go.
Do not worry, there is nothing to do.
Whatever appears in mind has no importance,
since it has no reality.
Do not hold on to it, and do not judge.
Let the play happen by itself,
arising and passing,
without changing anything -
everything vanishes and reappears, without end.
Only your searching for happiness
prevents you from seeing it,
just like a rainbow that you chase
without ever reaching it.
Although happiness does not exist,
it has always been there
and accompanies you
in every moment.
Do not believe that good
or bad experiences are real.
They are like rainbows.
Wanting to grasp the ungraspable,
you exhaust yourself in vain.
As soon as you relax this grasping,
space is there - open, inviting and joyful.
Make use of it.
All is yours already.
Do not search any further.
Do not enter the impenetrable jungle
to search for the elephant
that is already quietly at home.
Nothing to do,
nothing to force,
nothing to wish for -
and everything happens by itself.
Heart Advice from a Mahamudra Master OverviewThis book is by a Tibetan lama who spent three decades in meditation retreat in Tibet and India and then 22 years teaching Buddhism in Europe. It contains teachings that he considered vital for treading the Buddhist path to liberation, especially for westerners, and that he gave again and again to his Western students. His advice on Buddhist practice is simple and yet profound; it extends from the basics all the way up to the highest teaching of Mahamudra. His words are imbued with an authority and authenticity that comes from having tested these teachings and practices in the fire of his own extraordinary meditative experience. There is no dogma or display of rote learning in this book - everything offered here is heartfelt advice coming from personal experience and constitutes essential fare for the practitioner. The outstanding characteristic of the book is its singular power to inspire the reader to dedicate themselves seriously to Buddhist practice.
