Teaching Reading Beyond the Primary Grades: A Blueprint for Helping Intermediate Students Develop the Skills They Need to Comprehend the Texts They Read (Theory and Practice) ReviewWow... what an incredible book. I teach 6th grade and this book has given me so many great ideas to use in my classroom. The information is not completely complicated or different from what you're already doing; it simply makes you look at your reading program in a new light. It made me say, "Huh..." and "Ah-hah" so many times. Majorie is a fantastic author and I actually had the privilege of having her instruct my class for three days- what a treat! Any time you are able to learn something from her- do it. I have already employed some of her ideas in my classroom so far this year and am really pleased with how it's going. I highly recommend this book to classroom teachers who teach reading to 3rd-6th graders.Teaching Reading Beyond the Primary Grades: A Blueprint for Helping Intermediate Students Develop the Skills They Need to Comprehend the Texts They Read (Theory and Practice) OverviewWith this book, Marjorie Lipson bridges the gap between reading in the primary grades, where students receive daily explicit instruction and guided reading, and reading in middle school, where they must read many genres independently, with understanding. Grounded in Lipson's research in intermediate classrooms, the book provides a blueprint for planning and delivering instruction in word recognition, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension. It also addresses the scheduling, management, and assessment practices needed to ensure student engagement and proficiency. For use with Grades 3-6.
