It is indespensible for beginning writers and teachers of beginners. The book provides both detailed instruction and examples from famed poets to first graders. The authors show the practicality of the exercises by sharing personal teaching experience and even give alternatives for different skill levels. By teaching how creativity can work within a given form, they help students to eliminate the sterility often found in beginners' poems. For those who want to write poetry but don't know where to begin, Collom and Noethe not only give you the tools, but show you how to use them.Poetry Everywhere: Teaching poetry Writing in School and in the Community OverviewSixty five alphabetically ordered entries on poetry, each more than two pages, offering exercises, examples and student samples. Also includes seven essays pertaining to teaching poetry, several suggestions on how to use the book, and an appendix showing exercises by school subjectA collection of entries pertaining to virtually all the different forms of poetry. Responsive Literacy Coaching: Tools for Creating and Sustaining Purposeful Change ReviewThe book is an excellent reflective overview of the author's experiences with literacy coaching. I did not find it to be a useful research tool or resource for my graduate reading program.
The book contains several charts, tables, 2" margins, index, references, web resources, and 149 pages of information. In a normal book the information could be consolidated into approximately 50-70 pages.Responsive Literacy Coaching: Tools for Creating and Sustaining Purposeful Change Overview
In Responsive Literacy Coaching, Cheryl Dozier draws on twenty-four years of experience as an elementary classroom teacher and teacher educator to present both a theoretical framework and practical tools to enact responsive literacy coaching. Through thoughtful and purposeful coaching, teachers learn effective ways to improve literacy instruction and student achievement.

The range of tools offered in the text invite customization based on the reader's specific instructional context. This framework empowers literacy coaches and teachers through conversation, sustained engagement, and reflective analysis. Dozier argues that at its best, literacy coaching is responsive, collegial, thoughtful, thought-provoking, deliberate, reflective, and transferable. In this book she invites readers to enter into a coaching dialogue, through:
vignettes that bring coaching interactions to life;
prompts to engage both teachers and students;
occasions for collaborative reflection;
frequently-asked questions.

As literacy tasks are documented and analyzed, coaching interactions logged and categorized, and assessment scores scrutinized, Dozier cautions coaches to avoid being so caught up in the doing of coaching that one forgets the purpose behind it. In this book she provides an occasion for them to step back, and ask, what is the goal of literacy coaching? What kind of literacy environments and experiences are we creating for our schools and our students? What is possible as we engage in transformative literacy practices? While the tools offered in this book do not provide a "quick fix," they foster critical thinking and sustained inquiry that leads to positive change for both teachers and students.

Inquiry-Based English Instruction : Engaging Students in Life and Literature ReviewI recommend this book to teachers hoping to energize their literature or writing classes by positioning all students as creative, ambitious researchers capable of critiquing or even transforming worlds outside the classroom. When I discovered it two months ago, it struck me as just the resource I needed for revitalizing my college survey of multicultural literature for freshman and sophomores, a course which sometimes engaged and sometimes bored students. I have since redesigned materials for the course, using Beach and Myers' idea that to fully understand literature-or our own lives-we must think of individual people (whether characters in a story, authors of those stories, or ourselves and others in the real world) as part of larger systems or "social worlds," acting to protect and continue those systems or to challenge and change them. The book clearly delineates the components of social worlds and is full of sample activities and assignments; with these, I have revised my own discussion questions, presentation assignments and writing prompts. I have also shown Chapter 8, "School and Sports Worlds," to several high school teachers, who now plan to assign the ethnographic inquiry projects outlined there rather than assigning traditional research papers. Why do we honor some students' background knowledge and ignore that of others? How can we build on the "gifts of diversity" in our classrooms? Classroom Diversity offers examples of teachers wrestling with these issues.
