GACE Early Childhood Education 001, 002 Teacher Certification Test Prep Study Guide (XAM GACE) ReviewI went to my local book store to buy a GACE Early Childhood study book because I could not waste time having one shipped. I had two options, both were $40. I picked this book and I deeply regret it. The other book (sorry, I don't know which one it was) was much more succint with information and provided more of a summary/quick review of topics. It included two practice tests. Flipping through this book I noticed that it had a lot more in-depth information on the topics, and so I went with this book because I thought it would be a good resource to have on my bookshelf for the future if I ever needed to brush up on anything. I have studied with this book for a week now and I hate it. I thought it wasn't a big deal to only have one practice test, but those tests are actually a great way to study because the questions and answers actually serve as a refresher and can help you pinpoint things to look up. So the huge flaws with this book are:
1) Only one practice test
2) The information is organized point by point according to the professional standards for teachers, which means the information is not presented in a logical order. It would make sense to have a review about teaching reading that goes from early reading stages through advanced reading, but instead it is disjointed and goes all over the place. Moreover there is just way too much info. It's much better when studying to have something more streamlined.
3) The absolute worst thing about this book is that the one measley test they provide is riddled with horrible errors,and I don't mean typos. For instance, just in the first 38 questions of the practice test (the reading and ELA portion) there were three "correct" answers that were flat-out wrong. For instance, the test said that this sentence has INCORRECT subject-verb agreement: "Jennifer is one of the women who writes for the magazine." They were trying to trip us up by throwing in a prepositional phrase between the true subject and the verb and they tripped themselves up. Jennifer writes. Not women write. Ridiculous! Another test error: they said that "decoding" is to "construct meaning." NO. Decoding means to be able to sound out the words on the page regardless of whether or not you understand it and can make meaning of it. Word recognition is when you can construct meaning. Number 18 is incorrect too, but I won't bore you with the details. There were three other questions that were vague, poorly worded, or just plain dumb to the point that you will probably get the answers wrong. So 6 of the first 38 questions are either completely ridiculous or flat-out wrong, so you're gonna freak out when you check your answers and you have a bunch wrong. The test is just so badly written, and it's a shame that no one proofed it to see that the information was actually correct. Finally, the test's designation of easy, average, or rigorous for the questions seems to be completely arbitrary. The most common sense questions that anyone on the street should know were supposedly "rigorous" while some of the technical stuff I had never even heard of was apparently "easy" material. There aren't many GACE Early Childhood books to choose from, but don't pick this one.
