Prego An Invitation to Italian (Student Edition) ReviewAs a former student, and now teacher of first year Italian at the university level, I found the previous editions of Prego! to be far superior than any other college Italian text available. I was, however, very disappointed by this edition and the number of mistakes and poor editing I found. Gone are the tables and charts which were so helpful. The literature sections are far too complicated for the beginner student. Had I been able to see this edition ahead of the deadline for ordering texts by begining of the semester, I would have seriously considered other options.Prego An Invitation to Italian (Student Edition) OverviewThis text provides an introduction to the fundamental structure of contemporary Italian language and its culture. This edition contains four new cultural collages which trace four topics, such as "The City", up to the present day. An accompanying audiotape for instructors is also available.--This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

French Lessons: A Memoir ReviewIt is said when the student is ready the teacher will appear, and for me this has always been the case. Having first studied Latin and Spanish, I finally arrived at a point in my life where I wanted to learn French. Suddenly, everything seemed to facilitate my efforts. My job enabled me to travel to France, I discovered my new colleague was a French tutor in his spare time, and one day I found this little book.
Imagine a story about learning a language that holds your interest as the momentum builds until suddenly you reach the climax -- the sounding of the perfect French "R". Those who've worked and worked at learning a language can appreciate the moment. But this book is not just about reaching the perfect French "R" it's about coming of age.
The writer is a professor of French Literature at Duke University who says she found her own voice through the learning of another language--French. But before she did that, she was a young girl living in America who was the daughter of a man who took part in the Trials at Nuremberg. And, she had a Jewish grandmother who spoke to her in Yiddish.
Alice Kaplan's autobiography of her early years in America and France and her recollected memories of her parents and grandparents, especially her father and her grandmother are haunting.French Lessons: A Memoir Overview

Alif Baa: Introduction to Arabic Letters and Sounds (Al-Kitaab Arabic Language Program) (Arabic Edition) ReviewFirst, to understand my review, a little about me: I am fluent in English, Spanish and Russian and I am a linguist. So I enjoy all the details about language that this book includes.
Great book for practicing writing, dictation, and reading along with conversation skills. Each chapter introduces some letters, has you practice writing them, has a few dictation exercises where you listen and try to write the word. Also, the book has access to an online component which is SO MUCH easier than downloading each individual media file on your computer. The website is great and loads quickly. Towards the end, the focus is more on conversation.
The book focuses on Egyptian, Levantine and Modern Arabic. All vocab is presented in all three dialects. However, as someone studying Gulf Arabic (for which textbooks are hard to find), I wish they presented gulf arabic as well. Don't confuse yourself with all the dialects - if you just wnat to know Arabic stick with modern Arabic and then later learn a specific dialect.
The reason it recieves a 4:
1) The answer key has to be bought separately which is so annoying if you are learning on your own. Especially since they do not tell you this. I spent a good deal of time searching for the answer key before finally googling and figuring out I had to buy it.
2) Since it's a textbook, the book is quite pricey. Plus the online subscription only lasts 18 months, so if you want to use it for longer than 18 months, you will have to pay an additional $25 (the first 18 months are free).
Overall, a solid textbook. But probably better for serious language students who are learning a second or third language.Alif Baa: Introduction to Arabic Letters and Sounds (Al-Kitaab Arabic Language Program) (Arabic Edition) OverviewThe best-selling Alif Baa is the first volume of the Al-Kitaab Arabic language program and is now available in a new third edition. In this new version of the introduction to Arabic letters and sounds, English-speaking students will find an innovative integration of colloquial and formal (spoken and written) Arabic. Together, the book and new companion website provide learners with all the material necessary to learn the sounds of Arabic, write its letters, and begin speaking Arabic, including interactive, self-correcting exercises to enhance learning. The online component also gives instructors additional online grading options.

FEATURES
• Four-color design throughout the book features over 100 illustrations and photographs

• Gives learners and instructors color-coded options for the variety of language they wish to activate in speaking: Egyptian, Levantine, or formal Arabic (MSA)

• Introduces over 200 basic vocabulary words in all three forms of spoken and written Arabic side by side, including expressions for polite social interaction, and activates them in interactive homework exercises and classroom groupwork

• Includes video dialogues in Egyptian and Levantine, filmed in Cairo and Damascus

• Includes video footage of an Arabic calligrapher, capsules on Arabic culture, and images of street signs from Morocco, Egypt, and Lebanon

• Includes new English-Arabic and Arabic-English glossaries, searchable in the companion website

• Textbook includes a convenient DVD with the basic audio and video materials (no interactive exercises) for offline study that will play in iTunes and compatible MP3 players

• New companion website (sold separately)—alkitaabtextbook.com—features a fully integrated set of interactive exercises with all the video and audio materials and additional online course management and grading options for teachers

Alif Baa provides the essential first 20-25 contact (classroom) hours of the Al-Kitaab program, accompanied by 40-50 homework hours. Students who complete Alif Baa should reach a novice-intermediate to novice-high level of proficiency.

The Anthropology of Language: An Introduction to Linguistic Anthropology ReviewThe content is substantial, well organized, and visually appealing. The author does an outstanding job in connecting the material to real-life issues.
For use as a textbook, ideally it should have more exercises and questions for students. The "student activities" section at the end of each chapter merely points the reader to the companion workbook, which admittedly has some great stuff, but too often the exercises in it are just "go to these websites and write an essay about them".The Anthropology of Language: An Introduction to Linguistic Anthropology OverviewThe new edition of this highly successful, student-centered text fully engages students by emphasizing contemporary issues and the application of linguistic anthropology. Students easily learn from real-life chapter-opening vignettes ("In the Field"), and the boxed features that provide concrete examples of "Doing Linguistic Anthropology" and "Cross-Language Miscommunication." This edition continues to use a holistic framework to discuss the three key areas of linguistic anthropology -- historical linguistics, structural linguistics, and sociolinguistics -- and provides more emphasis on methodology, skills, techniques, tools, and applications, including new sidebars, more visuals, and more examples from different languages.
