Every Child, Every Classroom, Every Day: School Leaders Who Are Making Equity a Reality ReviewI have a monthly breakfast with a group of other educators and over our blueberry pancakes last month someone suggested this book. I am a principal working on my doctorate and am planning on moving into central office administration and found this book both enlightening for my future work and helpful for my current work. It uses a series of cases to describe common issues in school districts, and really gives good insight into the politics, thinking, resource allocations, and decisions that go into dealing with tough issues.
I've always thought of the folks at Harvard as egg-heads, but this book is much more accessible than some of the stuff I've tried to read from them... maybe because it is based on what is actually going on in school districts instead of theoretical gobbledygook from people who have never tried to teach a child to read.
I recommend this book for educators, especially those who are or want to be administrators in a district.Every Child, Every Classroom, Every Day: School Leaders Who Are Making Equity a Reality OverviewUrban school superintendents face unprecedented challenges. They must ensure that all students achieve a high level of performance despite a lack of resources, the intractable problems of race and poverty, a chaotic governance structure, and the often conflicting demands of teachers, parents, unions, and the community. This important book, edited by the co-directors of the prestigious Harvard Urban Superintendents Program (USP), explores the ways in which superintendents can make a difference in the lives of each child, every day, by being knowledgeable about and driven by what happens in the classroom.
The editors and distinguished contributors cover a wide range of vital topics that superintendents face from the day they are hired to the day they retire, such as how superintendents can most effectively communicate their vision, plan strategically, institute instructional reform, engage the community, and allocate resources. The book is filled with illustrative examples of well-known superintendents who are trailblazing new means to achieve educational fairness for all children and are changing the landscape of urban school systems today. In addition, Every Child, Every Classroom, Every Day highlights the Urban Superintendents Program's Leadership Framework, which is designed to aid administrators and educators in decision making and achieving equity. An ancillary CD containing teaching notes and exhibits is also included as an aid to teachers who wish to scaffold material discussed in the text.
Co-published with Education Week and the American Association of School Administrators.

The School Principal: Visionary Leadership and Competent Management ReviewI needed the book as quickly as possible. It arrived in perfect condition in exactly the timeframe I needed. I have paid for expedited shipments before with other companies and the money was wasted b/c the item did not arrive any more quickly. That was not the case this time. Thank, goodness!!The School Principal: Visionary Leadership and Competent Management OverviewOver the past two decades, efforts to improve schools have significantly modified role expectations for principals. Today, school-level administrators are expected to be both visionary leaders and competent managers. Based on the conviction that administration is an amalgam of leadership and management, The School Principal emphasizes the need for practitioners to apply conceptual skills to make "what to do" decisions, to apply technical skills to make "how to do" decisions, and to apply relational skills to engage in democratic decision making. Kowalski frames the book with a discussion of the nature of schools, the roles of principals, and their need to improve schools. The book then provides a balanced treatment of leadership and management, covering issues of personal behavior, instructional leadership, relationship building issues, finances, facilities, personnel management, pupil services, and maintaining safe schools. The text closes with discussion of the vital aspects of practice for contemporary principals, addressing problem solving, collaborative change strategies, and personal commitment to being a principal.Special Features:Vignettes introduce the subject matter in the context of common challenges faced by practitioners.Knowledge-Based Questions and Skill-Based Activities prompt readers to engage with and reflect on the chapter content. The School Principal aligns with the Educational Leadership Consortium Council (ELCC) Standards.Treating principals as concurrently visionary leaders and competent managers, this excellent text addresses the needs of aspiring and practicing principals, providing the tools to build effective and efficient schools.

Strategic Leadership: Integrating Strategy and Leadership in Colleges and Universities (ACE Series on Higher Education) ReviewA text book is a text book, so looking at the rest of the transaction, the service was fantastic and on time.Strategic Leadership: Integrating Strategy and Leadership in Colleges and Universities (ACE Series on Higher Education) OverviewStrategic Leadership addresses deep and continuing issues relating to strategy, governance, management, and leadership in higher education during a period of rapid change. Each of these themes is at the heart of current debates about the capacity of universities to respond to new expectations, market realities, reduced state funding, globalization, technology, and a long list of other challenges. Dealing with these issues can immobilize colleges and universities, or it can cause them to become so market-driven that they will sacrifice their own legacy of academic values. This book places strategic planning in a new conceptual framework that is oriented to interactive leadership rooted in human agency and values. It will assist academic professionals, stakeholders such as trustees, and students of higher education to better understand and use strategic planning as an effective process and as a method of collaborative leadership.

What's Worth Fighting for in the Principalship, Second Edition ReviewIn the book, What's Worth Fighting for in the Principalship, Michael Fullan outlines what he feels are the key guidelines for being a successful principal. The author's thoughts are presented in a concise, understandable format, and he clearly makes his point. That being, that change begins with the individual first examining themselves and then advocating for ways to empower other individuals in the organization. Furthermore, Fullan dismisses the notion that change is accomplished "through" a person or leader and instead puts forth the notion that effective, lasting change can only be accomplished through a combination of clear direction and collaboration. Fullan stakes this claim from a variety of angles throughout the book and in some cases becomes redundant in emphasizing his views. With that said, I should also note that Fullan does back up his arguments with documented research such as case studies and he credits the findings of other authors on numerous occasions as a means to support his comments. While I wouldn't exactly place this book on any "must read" lists for new principals, there are some good examples and certainly some meaningful lessons for new school leaders. In addition, I applaud the fact that the author chose to summarize his major points in each section in a "list" format which is easy to digest. Overall, I think Fullan accomplishes his goal of laying out some basic concepts for principals to be aware of, but I'm equally convinced that readers will appreciate the fact that the book only consumes an hour or so of their time. What's Worth Fighting for in the Principalship, Second Edition OverviewI wish I had had access to these insights during my own turbulent years as a school principal.--From the Foreword by Roland S. Barth, Founding Director, The Principals Center, Harvard Graduate School of EducationIn the 12 years since the publication of the first edition of this bestseller, policymakers and school reformers have increasingly pointed to the school principal as the most important agent for needed change in our schools. With this recognition, principals are now expected to do even more in their already overloaded schedules. In this much-awaited, fully revised new edition, the author offers valuable advice and practical guidelines that draw on new research and focus on what's still worth fighting for in our schools:* Deep and creative learning for all students not just minimum competency in tested achievement * Professional learning communities that respect and engage teachers in the quest to improve learning * Sustainable leadership that creates lasting improvement rather than quick fixes that fade all too fast after early promise
