Successful Strategies for Twice-Exceptional Students (Practical Strategies Series in Gifted Education) ReviewThis book intends to provide strategies for parents and teachers to help "twice exceptional" students, that is, gifted children who also have a learning disability. Unfortunately, the analysis of problems is superficial and most of the strategies trite - - and irrelevant to the particular problems of these students.
For example, the section on reading disabilities suggests that parents "reinforce strategies taught in school," "model reading habits," "take advantage of computer programs focusing on reading," "provide one-on-one help when needed," and "utilize the public library." Those are good suggestions *for any student*. None of those suggestions address either giftedness or reading disabilities, much less the combination of problems. I've quoted only the section on reading disabilities, but unfortunately all of the chapters are like this.
Besnoy's discussion of the particular challenges of twice-exceptional students is limited by the fact, which he notes, that each combination of challenges is different. A dyslexic student with an IQ of 130 and a dyslexic student with an IQ of 160 pose very different challenges. The research on such students is weak - - researchers have often overlooked the challenges that gifted children face, and typically deny that gifted children can even have learning disabilities.
The thinness of the research literature means that any book is a step forward for these children, their parents and their teachers. Besnoy reviews some of the issues, and there is something to be learned from those passages. But in the big picture, there's a definite need for a good book on this topic but unfortunately this is not that book.Successful Strategies for Twice-Exceptional Students (Practical Strategies Series in Gifted Education) OverviewSome kids, including gifted students, have difficulties in school. A gifted student with learning disabilities may continuously struggle with certain areas of instruction, but never receive identification of or accommodation for their difficulties, because their gifts mask their disabilities. Gifted students with learning disabilities need unique instruction and a practical use of accommodations to succeed in school. It is important for educators to familiarize themselves with the definitions and characteristics of various learning disabilities, and learn the strategies they can use in the classroom to help gifted/learning-disabled students succeed. In this book, Kevin Besnoy takes an in-depth look at the various learning disabilities and difficulties some gifted students face, provides practical tips for accommodating and planning instruction for those students, and gives an overview of federal law related to this population. This book gives teachers tips for grouping gifted students in and out of the classroom and provides a menu of options for serving gifted students. This is one of the books in Prufrock Press' popular Practical Strategies Series in Gifted Education. This series offers a unique collection of tightly focused books that provide a concise, practical introduction to important topics concerning the education of gifted children. The guides offer a perfect beginner's introduction to key information about gifted and talented education.
