The Handbook of Knowledge-Based Coaching: From Theory to Practice ReviewI was drawn to this book being a physician often in management, and an individual with a keen interest and admiration for traditional coaching. This book skillfully explains the theories behind current coaching practice and describes in detail pertinent examples that brings these theories to life and creates a practical understanding that can be utilized in a variety of situations. I found the chapter on leadership, written by one of the editors, Diane Brennan, particularly fascinating. In the first part of this chapter, Ms. Brennan reviews a number of theories that describe the various leadership styles and techniques and references these completely. From there she proceeds in a step-by-step fashion to define how this knowledge is utilized in coaching applications. This information is exceptionally beneficial to anyone in a management position, essentially in any field. By breaking down leadership to its basic form; one easily recognizes that great leaders aren't necessarily born but can be created and developed. By learning these theories, one's own skills can be easily enhanced. There were a number of other chapters that were just as informative and practical; while the entire book gave me a profound appreciation for the field.
Without being in the field of coaching but often finding myself in a leadership and administrative role; I found this book easy to understand, well referenced and incredibly useful.I would recommend it whole heartedly to anyone in a management position; that strives to improve their own and their organization's efficiency and skills.
