Marvelous Minilessons for Teaching Intermediate Writing, Grades 4-6 ReviewI first met Lori Rog (in writing) in a fantastic book I found in the fall Marvelous Minilessons for Teaching Beginning Writing, K-3. Filled to the brim with useful, practical, and innovative techniques that teachers can use right away in the classroom. I'm still mining that treasure trove for ideas and find that many of them can be used easily in the upper elementary grades as well. I was thrilled to discover Lori was coming out with a version for the intermediate grades. Her new book "Marvelous Minilessons for Teaching Intermediate Writing, Grades 4-6" continues her tradition with another winning book.
There are so many features of the book that I love. The organization is simple, easy to dip into if you need a quick idea, as well as one that can be read straight through. However, I am quite unable to read this book straight through. Once you read a couple of her ideas, you get really excited and want to try them immediately in your classroom!
Lori's lessons are explained in good detail, are usually never more than a couple pages long, and often come with the organizer or tool you can use right away. Far more than just a book that you just pull random lessons from, many lessons connect together to form a coherent plan that can assist you in teaching the modes.
Lori also focuses on current writing trends, such as using prewriting planners (yeah!), six trait writing, and working with kids on those state writing tests. She also includes chapters on writing informational texts and persuasive writing (two of my favorite forms of writing to do with kids.)
As an educator of more than twenty years now, I haven't found a more easy to use, practical, and ultimately extremely powerful writing resource to use. Once you buy this book, you'll be using it in your classroom by the next day. It's that good!Marvelous Minilessons for Teaching Intermediate Writing, Grades 4-6 OverviewFinally-a resource to help you teach writing specifically to intermediate students! Bestselling author Lori Jamison Rog presents 40 of her favorite tried-and-true research-based writing minilessons, covering everything from planning strategies to crafting specific genres. Each minilesson is linked to one or more of the six traits of effective writing and includes
- A specific learning goal - Sample student writing to use as models - Graphic organizers to support guided practice - 'Teacher talk' to show you the language you might use when presenting the lesson - Additional teaching ideas to take your instruction even further
This is not a prescriptive writing program; rather, think of this as a menu of lessons from which you may choose, fully adaptable to meet your students needs and fit into your curriculum.
